India vs West Indies 5th T20I: 48 minutes of cricket

Heavy rain in Bengaluru held up the start, and by the time the covers came off the match had been cut to nine overs a side. Hope won the toss and put India in.

India went after the bowling straight away. Ishan Kishan hit 30 off 10 balls, with three fours and two sixes, before Shamar Joseph removed him. One of his sixes, swung over long leg off Romario Shepherd, was the 100th of the series. Iyer made 22, and Naman Dhir smashed 24 not out off just six balls, with three sixes.

West Indies kept taking wickets, though, and India were 118 for 5 after 7.4 overs when the rain came back. It did not stop in time for even a five-over chase, the minimum needed for a result, and the umpires called the game off. In all, the match lasted about 48 minutes.

Series review: what the 2-2 tells us

Shai Hope was the player of the series in all but name

Shai Hope made two unbeaten hundreds, 102 not out in the Ranchi chase and 102 not out off 50 balls in Hyderabad. The second was his third T20I century, the most by any West Indies batter, according to Al Jazeera. He finished the first four games as the leading run-scorer on 261, with Sherfane Rutherford second on 221.

India’s batting was not the problem

India scored 223 in both the third and fourth games, and even in Bengaluru they were scoring at more than 15 an over. Iyer (159 runs), Sanju Samson (152) and Abhishek Sharma (139) were India’s top three run-scorers after four matches.

The bowling was

West Indies passed 200 in three games in a row: 252 in Ranchi, 209 for 7 in Indore and 247 for 3 in Hyderabad. That is 708 runs in three innings, and India won only one of those games. Arshdeep Singh and Naman Dhir led India’s wicket-takers with five each after four matches, but no Indian bowler controlled the scoring for long. That is the clearest lesson of the series for India’s selectors.

For West Indies, Roston Chase and Keemo Paul led the wicket-takers with six each after four games. Paul’s five-wicket haul in Hyderabad was the spell that took the series to a decider.
