How the first T20I went
Iyer won the toss in Lucknow on 6 October and chose to bowl. West Indies were bowled out for 171 in 19.1 overs. Captain Shai Hope made 52 off 37 balls and Sherfane Rutherford 56 off 34, but debutant Naman Dhir took 3 for 31 and Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel picked up two wickets each.
India then chased the target in 14.4 overs. Iyer, captaining the T20I side, reached his maiden T20I hundred off 42 balls and finished on 102 not out, adding an unbeaten 137 for the third wicket with Ishan Kishan. He was named player of the match.
What to watch in Ranchi
A win would put India 2-0 up with three matches left. West Indies have to win to draw level before the series moves to Indore on Sunday.
Iyer comes in on the back of a 42-ball hundred and an unbroken stand of 137 with Ishan Kishan, so India’s top order has momentum. Naman Dhir’s 3 for 31 on debut gave India a spin option alongside Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel, who shared four wickets in Lucknow.
For West Indies, the first match showed where the runs can come from. Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford both made fifties, but the rest of the line-up could not build on them and the innings ended with five balls unused. Hope, who also made an unbeaten 162 in the final ODI, is the batter India will most want to remove early.
The series so far
The tour began with three ODIs, which India won 2-1. West Indies took the final ODI on 3 October, chasing 352 with five wickets and 10 balls to spare after India had made 351 for 7. Hope scored an unbeaten 162 in that chase, outdoing KL Rahul’s unbeaten 129 off 87 balls for India.
