ICC Men’s Player Rankings 2026: Test, ODI and T20I Batting, Bowling and All-Rounders

The ICC publishes separate men’s player rankings for Test, ODI and T20I cricket, each split into batting, bowling and all-rounders. The nine tables below update automatically from the latest ICC rankings, so they reflect the most recent international matches. The official list is on the ICC website.

Test ratings move more slowly than the white-ball tables because there are fewer matches. India’s next Tests are two in New Zealand in November, which count towards the World Test Championship.

South Africa are the No. 1 Test team after beating Australia 2-1 in their home series, which ended in Cape Town on 31 October 2026. It is the first time South Africa have been top since January 2016. This table does not update automatically; we update it after each Test series.

India are fourth, one rating point behind New Zealand, so the two Tests in New Zealand in November will decide which of them is third. How ICC player ratings are calculated

Every player has a rating between 0 and 1000 points, and the ranking is simply their position in the table by rating. A rating above 900 is regarded as exceptional. The ratings are worked out by a computer program from match scorecards, with no human judgement involved.

The rating is a weighted average of a player’s whole career, but recent matches count the most. A great series lifts a rating quickly, and its effect fades as newer matches are added.

What counts for batters

• Runs scored, adjusted for how many runs were scored in the match. A hundred in a low-scoring match is worth more than one in a run-fest.
• The strength of the bowling attack, based on the bowlers’ own ratings.
• Whether the batter was not out, which earns a bonus.
• The match result, with extra credit for wins against highly rated teams.

What counts for bowlers

• Wickets taken and runs conceded, adjusted for the scoring level of the match.
• The quality of the batters dismissed. Removing a top-rated batter is worth more than a tail-ender.
• Workload, so bowlers who send down a lot of overs get credit.
• The match result, again weighted towards wins over strong teams.

All-rounders

The all-rounder rating multiplies a player’s batting and bowling ratings and divides by 1000. A batter rated 600 who bowls to a rating of 500 scores 300, which the ICC treats as world class.

New players

Newcomers cannot jump straight to the top. In Tests, a batter’s rating is scaled down until they have played 40 innings: they carry 70 per cent of their full rating after 10 innings. Bowlers reach a full rating at 100 Test wickets, with 70 per cent after 30.

Where the ratings came from

The system began in 1987, at the suggestion of former England captain Ted Dexter, as a way to measure current form better than career averages do. The ICC later adopted it as the official player rankings.

The all-rounder formula, worked through

The all-rounder rating confuses many readers, so we have worked through three made-up players using the ICC formula (batting rating multiplied by bowling rating, divided by 1000).

Because the two ratings are multiplied, a player needs to be good at both skills to rank highly. A world-class batter with a weak bowling rating scores lower than a solid player who does both. That is why the all-rounder lists often look very different from the batting and bowling lists.

KhelGossip’s view: read the rankings as a form guide, not a verdict

The ICC system is fair and fully automatic, but it has two features fans often miss. First, it leans heavily on recent matches, so a player who has not played for a few months can slide down the table without doing anything wrong. Second, the scaling for new players means a young Test batter cannot carry a full rating until 40 innings, however good they are.

For Indian fans this matters most in T20Is, where India play a lot of cricket and their players move up and down quickly. In our view, the rankings are the best quick guide to who is in form right now. They are not a verdict on who is the better player over a career.
