The Impact Player rule is expected to stay in place for IPL 2027, but its future after that is under review. The BCCI asked all ten franchises to send their views on the rule by 31 August 2026, after most IPL captains raised concerns about it before the 2026 season.
Where the decision stands
In 2024 the BCCI extended the rule until at least the end of IPL 2027. In March 2026 the board said it would only review the rule after 2027, even though a majority of captains had expressed reservations.
After the 2026 season, the BCCI widened its consultation. Its note to franchises asked for feedback on the Impact Player rule along with player and match officials’ areas, umpiring, practice sessions and playing conditions. Reports since then indicate the rule will remain for 2027 while the feedback is assessed.
How the Impact Player rule works
- Each team names its playing XI and a list of substitutes at the toss.
- During the match, a team can bring in one of those substitutes to replace a player in the XI. The replaced player takes no further part.
- The substitute can bat and bowl in full, unlike a traditional fielding substitute.
- The change can be made at the start of an innings, at the end of an over, or when a wicket falls.
- Overseas limits still apply, so a team with four overseas players in its XI must bring in an Indian player.
In practice, most teams use it to bring in a specialist batter when batting and a specialist bowler when fielding, so each side effectively plays with 12.
Why players oppose it
The main criticism is that the rule reduces the value of all-rounders. If a team can swap a batter for a bowler mid-match, it has less reason to pick a player who does both. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya have all spoken against it.
Rohit argued that it could hold back the development of Indian all-rounders, a concern that matters to the national team as well as the IPL. Most franchises, however, supported keeping the rule when it was extended in 2024.
Domestic cricket has already dropped it
The BCCI used the rule in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy before taking it out of the 2024-25 edition. One reason given was that the ICC does not use the rule in its international tournaments, so removing it brings domestic T20 cricket closer to what players face for India. The IPL kept it.

What happens next
The franchise feedback goes to the BCCI and the IPL governing council. Any change for 2028 would need to be decided well before that season’s auction, because the rule affects how teams build their squads. CSK, for one, start the 2027 cycle with a new coach in Zaheer Khan.
