Dutch Grand Prix 2026: Lando Norris Triumphs Over Kimi Antonelli in Zandvoort Thriller

Lando Norris delivered a masterful performance to secure victory at the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, outdueling Mercedes rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli in an action-packed contest at Zandvoort. The McLaren driver executed a clever tyre management strategy to claim his second consecutive Formula 1 victory, crossing the finish line 11.536 seconds ahead of championship leader Antonelli.

George Russell completed a strong double-podium weekend for Mercedes by taking third place, building on his commanding victory in Saturday’s Sprint race. However, the Sunday afternoon showcase began with immediate drama when home favorite Max Verstappen crashed out on the opening lap, bringing out an early red flag.

Opening Red Flag and Antonelli’s Early Surge

Norris lined up on pole position after setting the fastest time in Saturday’s qualifying session. Tricky track conditions greeted the grid following pre-race rain showers across the coastal Zandvoort circuit. While Norris maintained his lead through Turn 1, drama struck further back on the opening lap.

Verstappen lost control of his Red Bull at the banked final corner, colliding heavily with the outside barrier and scattering debris across the track. Verstappen walked away unhurt, but race stewards red-flagged the event to clear the wreckage and repair safety barriers.

At the standing restart, Antonelli launched brilliantly to leap past Norris before the opening apex to claim P1. The 19-year-old Italian built a solid lead over the subsequent laps, holding the pace while Norris conserved his tyres in second place.

Norris Hunts Down the Lead

McLaren opted for a longer stint on the hard tyre compound, trusting Norris to manage tyre wear in clear air. By lap 50, the Briton began cutting into Antonelli’s lead as the Mercedes driver reported declining rear-tyre grip.

On lap 54, Norris made his winning move. Sweeping around the outside into Turn 1, he completed the pass to retake P1. Once in front, the McLaren opened up a comfortable cushion.

A late Virtual Safety Car (VSC)—triggered by Esteban Ocon’s stopped Haas—prompted Mercedes to pit Antonelli for fresh soft tyres. Though Mercedes instructed Russell to yield second place to his teammate, Antonelli could not make up the gap to Norris, who managed his pace to seal an 11.5-second win.

“Strategy won us the race today,” Norris remarked after securing his second consecutive win following his victory in Hungary. “I knew I had to remain patient, and that move into Turn 1 proved decisive.”

Russell Claims Sprint Victory

Saturday belonged to George Russell, who controlled the 15-lap Sprint race from pole position to claim victory ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Norris.

In Sunday’s main race, Russell defended third place against late charges from Lewis Hamilton and Leclerc. Hamilton finished fourth, while Leclerc rounded out the top five.
